Design and install by CES.
Client St John's PCC and a lot ofhard work put in by the churchwarden Simon Ludlow on behalf of St Johns.
St Johns is Grade II Listed. Built ]856, Architect Sir George Gilbert Scott.
A wonderful church with so much character, charm and architecture.
The lighting design had to have a minimal impact on the architecture but at the same time allowing for much of the large space to be lit for worship and to show the wonderful design of the internal space and architecture.
The existing lighting was very dull, had no impact and made the interior look rather bland. Son comfort lamps were in use which provided the wrong colour rendering not only for worship but to the internal fabric.
The original suspended pendants in the arcades were refurbished and new HQI Electronic control gear installed using CDM lamps providing 3000K warm white colour rendering.
Uplights were specially made to suit the charm of the building and installed in the aisles, nave and chapel.
The uplights used Xenon lamps providing 3000K warm white colour rendering and are fully dimmable, the effect of the uplighting for worship and feature lighting was just spectacular. Directional lighting to highlight the nave altar, pulpit, lectern font, memorial chapel and memorial plaques also had a great impact.
The chancel and sanctuary area had been re-lit back in 1998 using HQI luminaires. The lighting approach was to reuse the HQI luminaries but relocate to create more of an impact over the sanctuary and chancel and install CDM lamps offering 3000K warm white colour rendering.
Lighting control system was installed to create much flexibility, the CDM lamps could not be dimmed, the lighting control system was able to switch only the CDM lights and to dim all the directional spots and uplights creating so many wonderful lighting scenes.
St Johns church is now lit in all its glory, providing increased lighting for worship and concerts as well as highlighting the wonderful architecture, I am sure Sir George Gilbert Scott would be happy of this achievement.
