Design and installation by CES.
Client PCC All Saints church.
Architect John Bailey Thomas Ford and Partners.
All Saints church is a Grade II listing.
We were asked to provide a feasibility study on providing a complete new lighting system throughout the worship area and amenity lighting to the external footpath.
There is not a great level of natural daylight coming through the aisle windows, the nave ceiling could not be seen as there are no clerestory windows. One could just make out the faint paintings over the actual barrel ceiling in the nave.
Existing light levels were very poor and lamp maintenance was an ongoing issue and very expensive.
The clients were keen to keep the space open as the building was not very wide.
The design was to use bespoke wall washers that created uplighting and downlighting but on separate channels, Down lights throughout the aisles.
The chancel and sanctuary had a slightly different approach using T5 dimmable lamps with built in compact MR16 lamps. We had to design a small light trough at wall plate level to conceal the T5 lamps and wiring, the trough worked out really well and look like part ofthe existing wall.
Small compact tracks and spots were tucked behind the reveals in the sanctuary to illuminate the high altar.
Directional spots were used for the nave altar, pulpit, lectern, font and tomb, plus over the welcome areas for the notice boards and service books.
A lighting control system provided all the flexibility the church required even down to a visitors scene that was operated by a PIR sensor providing 15 minutes of on time, waiting for the next visitor to arrive.
The impact of the lighting installation was truly amazing, every architectural feature was bathed with light and the uplighting to the nave was a great susses, we even found original scriptures above the chancel arcade that had never been seen for a long time.
The result was very successful. Very happy clients.
Energy efficiency rating B.
Emergency lighting was installed using maintained luminaires and our twin head spotlights so to illuminate all the exit/escape routes.
The external amenity lighting was a mixture of traditional lanterns with contemporary flood.
All Saints is in a conservation area so it was very important to make sure the external luminaires blended in with the architecture and character of the church.
